Brazilian Popular Music / Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) is not a music style, it’s a contemporary trend in post-Bossa Nova urban popular music. The MPB grew out of the Brazilian protest songs of the sixties, as a reaction against the carefree lyrics of Bossa Nova. It brought us beautiful (and serious) protest and political songs and some of the greatest Brazilian songs ever written.
Some examples of the MPB came from Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, Gal Costa, Marisa Monte, Ana Carolina and many others. Many consider MPB as the “good” Brazilian music (more about that later).
Brazil has many music styles, like Choro, Bossa Nova, samba, pagode, forró, baião, MPB, sertanejo, axé music and a few others.
I’m going to show here for you two great artists, Marisa Monte and Chico Buarque (my favorite).
Let me know the Brazilian artists you like and your opinion about Brazilian music, singers and styles.
